Barnegat was discovered in 1609 by Henery Hudson, who named it for the inlet it occupied. Today, Barnegat Township offers a variety of extracurricular activities including camping at the Brookville Campgrounds or Long Beach RV Resort, visiting the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, hiking at the Barnegat State Park, skating at the Barnegat Skate Park, and kayaking in the inlet. In fact, Barnegat Township offers five school districts to choose from including Cecil S. Collins Elementary, Lillian M. Dunfee Elementary, Robert L. Horbelt Elementary, Russell O. Brackman Middle School, and Barnegat High School. The Barnegat Township School District boasts a factor grouping of “CD," which is the sixth highest of eight groupings based on socioeconomic status.
