Barnegat is a township within the southern half of Ocean County. Barnegat Township, New Jersey has a population of approximately 15,000, according to the 2000 census, and occupies 40.8 square miles. Barnegat is home to “Ol' Barney” which is the second tallest lighthouse in the country. Manahawkin is about seven miles south of Barnegat along U.S. Route 9, Waretown is about 3 miles north of Barnegat also along U.S. Route 9.
Bayville, New Jersey is located in northern Pine Barrens in Ocean County. Bayville is an unincorporated area with a population of just over 17,000 residents as of the 2000 census. Brick Township is part of the mainland, but Brick also has Beaches I, II, and III which are along the peninsula separating Barnegat Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Brick Township is about 2 miles southwest of Point Pleasant, and about 4 miles from Point Pleasant Beach.
Colts Neck, New Jersey is a township within Monmouth County. The township of Colt Neck has approximately 12,300 people, according to the 2000 census. Colts Neck as a whole is a rather affluent area; it is one of the wealthiest towns in the state. Colts Neck has very strict zoning which prevents a lot of commercialization and rather encourages large lots for homes and equestrian farms. Public education in Colts Neck is provided by the Colts Neck School District; about one-fifth of K-8 students attend private schools, and approximately one-half of high school students attend private high schools. Areas close to Colts Neck include Tinton Falls, Wall Township, Howell Township, Freehold Township, and Marlboro Township.
Forked River, New Jersey is an area in Lacey Township which is part of Ocean County. To some, Lacey Township is synonymous with Forked River. Those in the know pronounced the name Forked with two syllables (fork-ed), only outsiders and people new to the area pronounced it as one syllable. According to the 2000 census, Forked River has a population of approximately 2,000 people, and occupies 10 square miles. Forked River is about 5 miles south of Pinewald, 2.5 miles north-northwest of Lanoka Harbor, and about 4 miles north of Waretown.
Howell Township of Monmouth County, New Jersey, has a population of approximately 49,000, according to the 2000 census. Howell Township occupies approximately 61 square miles in a southern part of Monmouth County. Howell has many attractions including the Manasquan Reservoir Park, Freehold Raceway Mall, and Freehold Raceway; Howell has easy access to Shark River and Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson. Jackson has a population of approximately 43,000 people, according to the 2000 census, and occupies approximately 101 square miles. Public education is provided by the Jackson School District. Townships surrounding Jackson are: Freehold Township, Howell Township, Lakewood Township, Toms River Township, Manchester Township, Plumsted Township, Upper Freehold Township, and Millstone Township.
Lakewood Township, found in Ocean County, New Jersey has a population of approximately 60,000, according to the 2000 census. In the early 20th century, Lakewood was treated as a winter retreat by those in NYC; the Rockefeller's had an estate in Lakewood which is now Ocean County Park and Georgian Court University was formerly the home of the Jay Gould Estate. Lakewood is noted for its large Orthodox Jewish population; Lakewood has one of the largest yeshivas on the globe. Areas in Lakewood include Leisure Village, Leisure Village East. Neighboring townships are Howell, Brick, Toms River, and Jackson.
Manahawkin, New Jersey is an unincorporated area in Ocean County; Manahawkin is within Stafford Township. Manahawkin has a population of approximately 2,000, according to the 2000 census, and occupies 1.9 square miles. Public education for K-6 is provided by the Stafford Township School District and education for grades 7-12 is provided by the Southern Regional School District. Manahawkin has the only roadway into the resort communities of Long Beach Island via the Manhawkin Bay Bridge and is about 6 miles from Ship Bottom, 7 miles from Surf City, and 14 miles from Barnegat Light.
Manchester Township, in Ocean County has a population of approximately 39,000, according to the 2000 census, and occupies about 83 square miles. Manchester is home to the Lakehurst Naval Air Station, which is the location of the Hindenburg crash in 1937. Unincorporated areas within Manchester include: Cedar Glen Lakes, Cedar Glen West, Pine Ridge at Crestwood, Crestwood Village, Leisure Knoll, and Leisure Village West-Pine Lake Park. Public education is provided by Manchester Township School District.
Millstone Township, located in the western portion of Monmouth County, has a population of approximately 9,000, according to the 2000 census. Millstone occupies approximately 37 square miles. Public education for K-8th grade is provided by the Millstone Township Schools, but high school students attend Allentown High School, part of the Upper Freehold Regional School District. Millstone is about 22 miles east of Trenton, 20 miles northeast of Lakewood, and is adjacent to several townships including Jackson, Freehold, Upper Freehold, and more.
Plumsted Township, New Jersey can be found in the northwestern tip of Ocean County, occupying approximately 40 square miles and containing a population of approximately 7,200, according to the 2000 census. Public education is provided by Plumstead Township School district. Areas in and around Plumsted Township include New Egypt, Fort Dix, Browns Mills, Country Lake Estates, Crestwood Village, Jackson Township, Cream Ridge, and Lakehurst.
The Borough of Point Pleasant can be found in the northeastern section of Ocean County. According to the 2000 census, Point Pleasant has a total population of approximately 19,000. Point Pleasant is divided in two by the Point Pleasant Canal. Point Pleasant Borough is adjacent to the Manasquan River, Point Pleasant Beach, Bay Head, Beaver Dam Creek, and Brick Township.

The Township of Toms River is the county seat of Ocean County; it was known as Dover Township until 2006. Toms River has a population of nearly 90,000, according to the 2000 census, and occupies almost 53 square miles. The majority of Toms River is on the mainland, but Dover Beach North and Dover Beach South are on Barnegat Peninsula. Areas that are adjacent to Toms River are: Jackson Township, Manchester Township, Lakewood Township, Brick Township, Lavallette, Seaside Heights, Island Heights, South Toms River, and Berkeley Township.
Wall Township, New Jersey, in the south-eastern tip of Monmouth County has a population of approximately 25,000, according to the 2000 census. Areas within and around Wall Township include Allenwood, Glendola, West Belmar, Tinton Falls, Brick Township, Colts Neck Township, Howell Township, and Manasquan.
